The Book of Job basically asks if I love God or just His gifts? God knows, but He wants me to know where to find His best treasure. “In Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever” (Psalm 16:11). God Himself is the best gift!
Job had many earthly gifts as listed in Job 1:2-3: “Seven sons and three daughters. 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and very many servants.” But God allowed Satan to test him by removing them all!
How would you react? First, Job grieved deeply, then he bowed down and worshiped (Job 1:20). He reasoned, “Naked I came into the world and naked I go out. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
Wow, I wish I could handle a traffic jam that well! Honestly, during my battle with Stage IV cancer and many times since, I have complained, embraced self-pity, and numbed myself to God in disillusionment. Yet Job’s extreme experience showcases a believer’s ability to respond “well” to even tragedy when they turn to God Who is the fullness of joy.
Obstacles are open invitations to commune with Him. 1 Peter 1:7-9 says trials produce strong faith which is more valuable than gold. This resilience results in an intimate relationship with the Lord. “Though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory.” Again, He’s the best treasure!
When we eventually see Him in person in all His glory, all doubt will disappear, and we’ll be filled with joy. He’s telling us through Job and Peter, we don’t have to wait!
