Look backward to move forward.
“Every time I turn around … something bad happens.” Once when I said this to my dad, he jokingly said, “Stop turning around.”
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could ignore troubles? Many of us have “turned around” to discover a cancer diagnosis following us. Every time King David turned around someone was chasing him to kill him, including his predecessor King Saul and his own son Absalom! Yet David also saw God’s “goodness and mercy” following him and was confident they would follow “all the days of my life” and “in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:6). In 2002, I “turned around” to find Stage IV metastatic melanoma cancer had spread to my pancreas and other vital organs. My cancer battle sometimes seemed like the opposite of God’s goodness and mercy. Yet looking back I saw how much His blessings were mixed in with troubles!
So how did He show me His goodness and mercy in the midst of the cancer?
1) He unleashed His incredible POWER. He miraculously healed me “on this side,” giving me a front row seat to His capabilities while amazing doctors and others over the years! Glory to Him!
2) He revealed His tender PRESENCE. When I was truly at the end of my rope, I experienced the supernatural comfort of our Stronghold at key times.
3) He unveiled His providential PLANS. He gave me a new calling to launch and help lead our non-profit, Stronghold Ministry, to reach out to cancer patients with the love and salvation of Jesus. We certainly don’t need to write or start a non-profit to tell of His goodness! How has He worked good in your trials or cancer battle? We can all make lists and share them with others!
Thank You, Lord, for demonstrating Your goodness and mercy all the days of our lives and eternally! Help us “turn around” to see Your works … and praise You!
