Humans are intrigued by super-powers. The Greeks and Romans had their god-human heroes and we have our super-humans. There’s a long list of super-charged comic characters who’ve become mainstays in our movie houses.
While it might be nice to take down the local crime syndicate, I think most of us would be content with basic powers that exceed our own in a few key areas:
- To be able to pull out of a depression.
- To quickly regain our emotional footing after being insulted by someone who’s supposed to be on our side.
- To not fall to pieces when the oncologist says, “It spread.” Happened to me.
- To be patient when a crying child keeps us awake most of the night.
- To overcome the bully at work, in our social circle, or on our kid’s playground.
At the point of our most pressing needs, the Most Powerful Being in the Universe injects some really Good News. In the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, God has not only displayed His power over the worst of all circumstances – death – but He offers that very same resurrection power to us for coping in daily life! His Resurrection power lifts up fallen moods, broken relationships, sick bodies, wounded feelings, and every hardship we can imagine.
Too good to be true, right? In Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1:17-23, he speaks to our tendency to neglect, miss or doubt His offers. So he asks God to give us “a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him” and that “the eyes of your heart may be enlightened.” He knew we’d need help to even “see” God’s amazing offers! Makes me want to meditate on this entire promise to grasp and apply it better. Will you join me this Easter season? Open the eyes of our heart, Lord!
